Black History Month: Bio-About Poet and Author Naomi Johnson
Naomi Johnson, a renowned American poet and illustrator, was born in New Jersey. She is the youngest of two girls and the oldest of a boy. Naomi's educational journey began in the Newark and East Orange school districts, culminating in her pursuit of higher education.
After graduating from high school, Naomi embarked on her academic endeavors, earning an A.S. degree in Early Childhood and a B.A. with a major in Elementary Education. Alongside her studies, she dedicated herself to shaping young minds as a Teacher's Aid and later as a Substitute Teacher/Provisional Teacher within the Newark school system. Naomi's passion for education led her to a teaching position at Chade private school, where she excelled as a kindergarten teacher.
Driven by a desire to expand her skills and make a difference in the lives of students with special needs, Naomi returned to college to pursue certification in Teaching with The Handicapped and an M.A. degree in Teaching with Technology. However, her promising career trajectory was abruptly altered by a devastating car accident. Despite facing immense challenges during her recovery, Naomi drew strength from her spiritual faith and embarked on a new path as a writer.
Fueled by her innate talent and determination, Naomi channeled her creativity into writing and illustrating. Collaborating with her son Deshon, she brought her vivid imagination to life, incorporating his artwork and photographs into her projects. Tragically, the loss of her brother to gun violence. Gun violence further fueled Naomi's artistic expression, inspiring her to explore poetry as a means of healing and resilience.
In response to the profound impact of personal tragedy and adversity, Naomi's work took on a deeply introspective and uplifting tone. Through her book of poetry and illustrations, she offers solace and inspiration to others navigating similar struggles. In addition to her literary pursuits, Naomi has also ventured into digital art, developing multiple online platforms to showcase her diverse body of work.
