FORT LEE — A 90-year-old woman who was struck by a bus has died, a hospital spokeswoman said Saturday.
Soon Yae Kim of North Avenue died Friday after she was hit by a Coach USA bus near Main and John streets about 8:50 that morning.
The bus driver left the accident scene, but investigators did not know whether he did so intentionally, Capt. Roy Bortolus said. No charges were filed as of Friday afternoon, and law enforcement sources could not be reached Saturday.
Vincent Macri, the owner of Vincent Seoul Barbershop, said he saw Kim standing on the sidewalk away from the bus shelter, before falling forward onto the street with her hands and arms outstretched. She landed facedown in front of a bus that had already stopped, he said.
It was unclear whether a bus tapped the woman, causing her to fall.
People at the bus stop went to help and placed a coat on the victim. Kim's purse, salmon-colored coat and black cane remained scattered across the street as investigators looked for evidence.
She was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center in critical condition with internal injuries and injuries to her back, face and left arm, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said Friday.
The bus was traveling to Bergen Community College in Paramus with passengers from Fort Lee, Molinelli said. The bus operates as part of the NJ Transit Community Coach reduced-fare program, he said.
