A crash involving two NJ Transit buses injured 44 riders — three seriously — and temporarily closed traffic in the center lane of the Lincoln Tunnel on Monday morning. According to the New York City Fire Department, 28 people were hospitalized after the crash, which was reported around 8:45 a.m.
The center tube of the tunnel was blocked during the crash, which caused the estimated travel time from NJ 495 from the NJ Turnpike to the New York side via the South Tube to reach 110 minutes, a Port Authority spokesman told Patch at 10 a.m.
The normal travel time is 20 minutes, the spokesman said.
The NYFD reported that the incident was placed under control around 12:30 p.m.
NJ Transit officials stated that service to and from the Port Authority Bus Terminal was "on or close to schedule" at 1:29 p.m.
NJ Transit officials previously issued an alert at 9:19 a.m. advising commuters that bus service to and from Port Authority Bus Terminal was experiencing delays of up to 30 minutes “due to a NJ Transit bus accident in the Lincoln Tunnel.”
The crash took place when a 127 line bus with 37 passengers heading to the Port Authority station in New York from Ridgefield rear-ended a bus in front of it carrying 50 riders, the 128 line from North Hudson Park in Fairview, ABC New York reported.
