The 14 Most Dangerous Cities in the USA

The 14 Most Dangerous Cities in the USA

Although crime statistics change annually within each city, certain cities always rank high when it comes to the danger factor of living there. With the release of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s annual report on crime, there are a couple of newbies on the list. Here are the 14 most dangerous cities in the USA according to the latest statistics.

1. Camden, New Jersey

It didn’t take Governor Chris Christie’s State of the Union speech to tell us what crime stats already do. Camden clearly boasts the highest national crime rates and has been appropriately listed as such in the City Crime Rankings 2014 by CQ Press. Homelessness, drugs, and poverty are cited as the primary source of the rise in rapes, burglaries, and murders.

2. Flint, Michigan

Since plummeting into an economic free fall after the decline of the city’s heavily relied upon automotive industry, Flint seems to always top the list of most dangerous US cities. With income averages dropping steadily and poverty rates topping 40 percent, Flint will likely remain near the top.

3. Detroit, Michigan

With a population at just over 700,000 citizens, Detroit’s crime index just barely wavers under 500 again this year. With almost as many documented homicides as NY where the population is twelve fold, Detroit certainly earns a top spot for being a danger zone.

4. Oakland, California

The crime rate is steadily growing as the city’s police and budget cuts hit home. Although one of the most crime ridden cities in California, their police force is less than one-third of the size of an average city’s statewide.

5. St. Louis, Missouri

Even though brutal crime has decreased in the last decade, murder rates have started rising by about 5%, particularly over the last two years. The city is fostering hot-spot police tactics to have a greater impact on high crime areas.

6. Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland’s population of 391,000 people sees a crime index of just over 315.9 according to statistics, and this once stable city has become an epicenter of crime. Fortunately, the local economy is bouncing back, and there have been some recent declines in crime in recent months.

7. Gary, Indiana

Founded around the now defunct US Steel Corporation, the city literally hid the skids along with the company. Almost 40% of residents live under the poverty level, and this once quiet city has one of the highest murder rates in the nation with almost 70 per 100,000 residents.

8. Newark, New Jersey

Governor Chris Christie has a lot of work to do, and for a small state like New Jersey to have two top dangerous cities in the US is nothing to brag about. Cutbacks in social services, job training, and affordable housing has fueled the city to crime index highs of 287.9.

9. Bridgeport, Connecticut

Your probability of becoming the victim of a dangerous crime in Bridgeport is 1 in 83, so not exactly stellar. On a scale of 1-100 in safety, this city is rated a mere 10, which isn’t good news for the almost 150,000 residents.

10. Birmingham, Alabama

With an average 1500 reported crimes per 100,000 residents, Birmingham’s crime rates are actually dropping. This city has its fair share of problems, but rape crimes are by far the biggest with this act accounting for almost half of all crimes reported last year.

11. Memphis, Tennessee

With a surplus of assaults, robberies, and rapes in recent years, Memphis has become the most dangerous city in all of Tennessee, with residents having a 1 in 57 change of being victimized by a violent crime and a 1 in 16 chance of being the casualty of property theft.

12. Little Rock, Arkansas

Little Rock now boasts almost four times the national average when it comes to robberies each year with an average of 440 per 100,000 residents. The chances are 1 in 12 that you may be a burglary victim and are 1 in 56 that you’ll fall prey to a violent crime in Little Rock.

13. Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore’s struggle with drugs and gangs prevails in the city’s statistics with a reported 32 murders per 100,000 people, while the national average is only 4.7. For just over 640,000 residents, that adds up to a lot of murders, and assaults and robbery crimes are also extremely high in Baltimore.

14. Atlanta, Georgia

Crime certainly is rampant in Hot-lanta, and maybe it’s just the heat getting to the 440,000 southern residents in Atlanta. Living here means taking a 1 in 70 chance that you’ll be the injured party of a violent crime and a 1 in 14 chance that property theft will befall you.
