NEWARK — A national transit workers union is calling on prosecutors to press for attempted murder charges against the Newark man accused of stabbing a city bus driver seven times last weekend.
The Amalgamated Transit Union, a labor organization that represents more than 200,000 transit workers statewide, said today they want Maurice Young, 26, to face attempted murder charges in the Oct. 22 attack on NJ Transit driver Ihab Abounaja.
"The vicious and unprovoked attack of bus operator Ihab Abounaja should deeply concern every member of our community," said Ray Greaves, chairman of the state chapter of the ATU. "This assailant almost took a man's life, and threatened the safety of his passengers and other drivers on the road. The charges must reflect the horrific nature of this crime."
Young allegedly stabbed Abounaja as he unloaded passengers on Hawthorne Avenue in Newark around 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Newark police said Young was a passenger on the bus.
Greaves said Young should also face a federal charge that makes disabling a bus or train operator punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Young was charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses, and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office will determine if stiffer charges are appropriate when it receives the case later this week, said Katherine Carter, a prosecutor’s spokeswoman.
