BRIDGETON — The death of the woman found unresponsive near McCormick Place Wednesday night was ruled accidental after an autopsy Friday, according to authorities.

Police said that Bernadette W. Montgomery, 54, of New Castle, Del., appeared to have fallen under the rear tires of the N.J. Transit bus which she had just exited.

"With the evidence gathered at the scene as part of the accident investigation, video surveillance from several businesses, statements taken from witnesses and preliminary autopsy findings it appears the victim fell shortly after exiting the NJ Transit Route 410 bus," Capt. Michael Gaimari of the Bridgeton Police said, "The bus' passenger side rear tires then ran over the victim."
A passerby discovered the body and reported it to the authorities around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Montgomery was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers located the bus parked in the Hancock Center Parking lot on state Route 49 a short time after Montgomery's body was found, according to Gaimari. He said the detectives recovered evidence from the bus at that time.
An autopsy was completed at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point on Friday, according to Gaimari.
He said that the bus driver may not have realized what happened and drove away. The driver's name has not been released by police and no charges have been filed. The incident remains under investigation by Bridgeton Police and the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office.

sorry to hear about the death of your friend. people are taking on trains &People have to be more responsible & pay attention. Yield to trucks, buses & trains & avoid DEADLY consequences. Motorists, pedestrians are constantly cutting off & ignoring these BIG rigs & not taking SAFETY seriously. May she rest in peace.

Bernie was a dear friend of mine and I am saddened by her passing. My condolences go out to her family. NJ Transit should be held acoountable for this tragedy. The drivers are supposed to make sure the passengers are cleared of the bus before pulling of. I can not see how the driver could tell that something or in this case someone was ran over. I hope her family gets some answers. As to my friend Bernie, R.I.P. to God be the glory. I love you.

Alex, thanks for the follow-up. However, the story is far from over.
If they located the bus in a parking lot a short time later, that seems to indicate that the driver knew he had run over someone and panicked.

Your notion is excellent the problem is anything that not adequate folks are talking intelligently about. I am extremely joyful that I stumbled throughout this in my find for something referring to this.
