BLOOMFIELD
— Deshon Johnson and his mother, Naomi, were inseparable.
Their Montclair apartment is a
portrait of two lives that intersected at every angle.
A sketchbook is filled with pictures
drawn by mother and son. Her work is in color, his is in a muted
black-and-white.
Another book displays Naomi’s poetry
and Deshon’s illustrations. The cover is emblazoned with a photo of them.
The devotion went beyond words and
art. When Naomi was nearly killed in a car accident a few years ago, her only
child decided to stay close to home so he could care for her.
On Wednesday, his day off, Deshon
agreed to work an extra shift so he could make a few more dollars for the
family.
But as he ran to catch his bus on
Bay Avenue in Bloomfield, the 22-year-old somehow fell and was crushed beneath
the vehicle. He died at the scene.
"My baby got killed," his
devastated mother said Thursday as she clutched her own mother for support.
"They took my baby’s life."
No charges have been filed against
the driver of the Coach USA bus. Officials from the company, which handles
certain routes for NJ Transit, did not return calls for comment.
It remains unclear whether the bus
struck Johnson, or if he slipped and fell under its wheels. The lack of answers
has only added to the grief felt by those close to him.
"We understand that accidents
happen," said Johnson’s best friend, 22-year-old Theo Williams. "But
if there’s any justice to be served, we would hope that would happen. We want
closure on what exactly did happen and whether anything needs to change."
Tom Wright-Piersanti/The Star-LedgerDeshon Johnson, a
22-year-old student at Essex County College was struck and killed Wednesday
morning by a bus in Bloomfield. Pictured is a makeshift memorial that was set
up at the scene of the accident.
Friends and family members described
Johnson as a driven young family man whose passion for music and art was
rivaled only by his devotion to his mother.
When he wasn’t studying finance at
Essex County College, Johnson worked part-time at the Home Depot store in
Clifton. He became the breadwinner for the family after his mother was nearly
killed in a car wreck in 2007.
Naomi Johnson said her car was
struck head-on by a stolen vehicle as it fled from police. Since the accident,
she has been unable to work and barely able to walk.
After the accident happened, Deshon
was juggling acceptance letters from Kean University, Delaware State and
Montclair State universities, his mother said. But he chose to go to ECC and
live at home so he could be closer to her.
"They had a very close
relationship," said another close friend, 21-year-old James Little.
"Everything he did was for his mom. She was his inspiration for everything
— his music, college and working everyday."
Deshon was his mother’s muse as
well. One of her poems, titled "I Did Not Struggle in Vain," is
specifically dedicated to her son.
"I struggle to make sure you do
not have to/and I love you/so I can give you the best in life," the poem
reads.
Naomi Johnson always pushed her son
to succeed with his artwork, music and education, but their roles were reversed
after the accident, as Deshon became a rock for his mother to lean on.
"He was my life," she
said. "He was my heart."
Despite the heavy workload, friends
said they never heard Deshon complain. Not once. But Naomi said that should
come as no surprise to anyone who knew her son.
"He was a very loving and
giving person," Naomi said. "He was my protector."

run over by a bus in Bloomfield. He was trying to catch a ride to his job in
Clifton so he could work an extra shift to make money for his disabled mother.

You have a lot of nerve,I assume
that you have no children to make the assumption that money is a cure all
for what ever bothers you.
for what ever bothers you.

Really? Did the bus swerve, speedup,
was another car involved, was he only running to catch the bus etc. There are a
bunch of options, the friend simple said he understands accidents happen, he
and the family just wants to know exactly what happened so they can have some
closure.
When tragedy happens, and
victims/victims families received limited info it makes situations a lot more
stressful and tense.

Instead of those making your Dumb
comments about anything but giving the condolences to that family is absurd.
She lost her son she has every right to feel whatever way she is feeling right
now. People have nerve trying to make accusations about anything. Whether or
not is was the driver fault or freak accident why the h%& would anyone have
the audacity to put there two sense about what she is saying.

This is a sad story and I never like
to see anyone lose their life like this. While I acknowledge that this is a
time of mourning for the family, I have to agree with NJREZ that until more
facts are known, accusations about the cause should not be made. Just as the
mom might read these posts, so might the bus driver who can also be hurt by
insuations and comments that imply he or she is at fault until more is known.
Beyond that, while there might be fault or it just may be a horrible accident,
as a parent I can not even begin to comprehend the pain of the mother and I
hope she finds some comfort with her family on this tragic loss. I am sorry.

How horribly sad! He sounds like
such an upstanding young man, he should be an inspiration to so many others!
And his poor mother.......just shaking my head at this senseless loss. No
matter what the circumstances or who is to 'blame,' think about this special
young person who will never be able to continue to touch the world as he did
for 22 years. RIP, and prayers to his mother and family and friends.

NJREZ and jerseyjolt.....
Relax, both of you. Jesus this woman just lost her son in a very tragic way. Even if it wasn't anyone's fault, let the woman grieve.......have either of you NEVER said anything that may or may not be accurate? Leave her alone for God's sake and stop being so quick to snap back-- NEWSFLASH---no one is accusing either of you.

jack, I am relaxed but I will
repectfully suggest you do the same and you also think before you snap back.
Sure I have said plenty of stupid things in my life, but are you so blind as to
ignore what any statements might do to the driver who has to live with what
happened; once said, the hurt can't be taken back. So while I understand your
comment, I am not saying anything to hurt the mom, but I also have a concern
for the driver and others who are involved with this tragedy. I trust you feel
the same way and so I stand by what I said.

Mom is grieving and what she said is
true. "They" did take his life. Probably not on purpose, probably it
was a horrible accident but it's true nonetheless.
