Authorities are still investigating the incident in which Mario Rosele Garcia, 39, of Palisades Park, was struck by an NJ Transit bus on July 11. He was taken to University Hospital in Newark in critical condition, where he died three days later.
According to Katherine Carter, spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, Garcia appeared to have been crossing the street at the time of the incident. The prosecutor's office dispatched its Major Crimes/Vehicular Homicide Unit to the scene, but no charges or summonses have yet been issued, she said.
NJ Transit spokesperson Nancy Snyder said that when such an incident involving one of its buses occurs, the company conducts its own internal investigation. The bus driver is also pulled from service until the investigation is completed. Snyder said Friday that the company's internal investigation into the Belleville incident continues.
The incident was one of at least three area bus accidents involving pedestrians in the past few weeks, with two of the victims succumbing to their injuries.
Exactly one week later, another pedestrian was hit by a bus and died, this time in Bloomfield. Deshon Johnson, 22, of Montclair was fatally struck on July 18 at the intersection of Broad Street and Bay Avenue. It is believed that Johnson, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was rushing to catch Bus No. 709 to get to his job at Home Depot on Broad Street in Bloomfield when he was hit, according to authorities. The bus was operated through Coach USA.http://www.northjersey.com/news/164076336_No_charges_filed_in_fatal_Belleville_bus_accident.html

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has identified the man who was killed by a NJ Transit bus yesterday as Deshon L. Johnson, a 22-year-old Essex County College student living in Montclair.
A press release from the Prosecutor’s Office said, “The preliminary investigation indicates Johnson was rushing to catch the #709 bus to get to his job when he was struck and killed yesterday morning by a NJ Transit Bus in the vicinity of Broad Street and Bay. He was pronounced dead at 10:54 a.m.
“No charges have been filed at this time. The investigation is ongoing.”
A spokeswoman from NJ Transit, Nancy Snyder, contacted Patch on Thursday.
“The driver of that bus was not a NJ Transit employee," she said. "He was employed by Community Transportation Company, also known as Community Coach.”
Snyder said there are ten contract carriers operating 56 bus routes in NJ Transit buses displaying the NJ Transit logo and the chevron symbol. “We have many private companies that operate NJ Transit bus routes throughout the state.”
Dan Carmicheal, a representative for Community Transportation, confirmed, “The driver is our driver, he is employed by Coach USA. We’re responsible for whatever he does on the job.”
Carmicheal said the incident is currently under active investigation.
“Tomorrow we’ll be in a better position to comment. [The authorities] are trying to come up with the reason this happened. We know there were five passengers on the bus but we haven’t heard anything yet.”
Another spokesperson for Coach, Stephen Van Horn, said, “We’re cooperating fully with the police investigation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”
Though authorities have not yet released information on the young man’s death, some witnesses at the scene say the accident may have occurred when Johnson was at the curb and the bus jump the curb as it was making a turn.
“The only information we were able to gather was that he was knocking on the windows of the back door of the bus,” said Bloomfield Mayor Raymond McCarthy. “I guess the driver didn’t see him or hear him as he was making the turn. He was making that big, wide turn at Broad and Bay.”
Martin O’Boyle, the owner of Brookside Garden Center at the intersection, agreed.
“They say he was at the 7-Eleven and was running late to catch the bus. I heard people say he was knocking on the door and trying to chase the bus down.”
Added O’Boyle, “I think it happened when the bus was rounding the corner,” noting that the bus stop for the #709 is on Broad Street and the accident occurred on Bay Avenue.
"It’s another one of those sad situations," said McCarthy. "It’s sad not only for the victim but for the driver. It’s a traumatic experience."

We as people need to band together and stop this vehicle death slaughter of
human life. These bus drivers are aggressive and reckless drivers. The bus
drivers need to start serving time in jail instead of labeling it as a
tragic accident or mistake. When a bus driver is driving around the corner to
fast and jumps the curb it should not be ok as an accident. The bus driver needs
to serve some major time. What ever happen to pedestrian always have the
right of way? There need to be a new law implemented about aggressive bus drivers.
The bus company needs to lower their standards. I know if a bus driver arrives
at their destination late or early they get written up.
When these bus driver do not serve time it is giving them the ok to kill again or it shows lack of human life value. All of the above name love ones are grieving or want to commit suicide due to the negligent of an aggressive driver who are driving a killer machine. These drivers can go home to their children, wife, husband and show them affection. However the victims love ones cannot. These bus drive supposed to be train to watch out for pedestrian. Every day a love one is crying because a reckless bus driver taken innocent lives. It is easy for the bus company give out hush money so they will not look bad but it needs to stop and hold them fully accountable. Our dead love ones cannot get another chance in life. Lets get a petition started to create a new law for bus drivers awareness or a stronger imprisonment sentences etc. Help me think on putting a new law in place for aggressive, rude, reckless bus drivers. WE NEED JUSTICE!

Another bus death
Passaic man killed by NJ Transit bus walking same
route he had for decades
Thursday,
September 27, 2012 Last updated: Thursday September 27, 2012,
7:31 PM
Joseph Currier was seen by neighbors
nearly every morning walking to Main Avenue, where he bought a newspaper or two
and boarded a bus on his way to work in Jersey City.
morning. Police were at the scene
investigating. Main Ave is closed in both directions at the scene.
On Thursday morning, he was struck
and killed by an NJ Transit bus as he walked toward the Te-Amo store that he
visited regularly since it opened 28 years ago, according to a store manager.
Authorities are still investigating
what caused the Newark-bound Route 74U bus to hit Currier on Main Avenue, at
the intersection with Brook Avenue, just after 6:30 a.m. Currier was pinned
beneath the bus, and the fire department had to extricate him, said Detective
Andrew White. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver of the bus was released
pending further investigation, White said. About 50 passengers were onboard at
the time, and none was injured, said NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder.
The Rev. Jose Lopez from St.
Nicholas Church gave last rights over Currier’s body before it was removed by
the medical examiner’s office. Currier, with his mother, was a parishioner of
the church, Lopez said.
Store manager Bakulesh Dave said
Currier always wore a Yankees baseball cap and would pick up a USA Today and
sometimes The Record. He was a nice man, he said, who loomed large in size but
hardly spoke.
Neighbor Bill DeNuto said he last
saw Currier Wednesday morning on his daily walk, and was shocked to hear about
the bus accident. “He was a nice fellow,” he said. “It’s a shame.”
Currier worked at the U.S. Post
Office since 2000. A Post Office spokesman said a Joseph Currier of Passaic
was a machine operator at the Network and Distribution Center.
He lived two blocks away from the
scene of the accident. A handicap-access ramp was installed at the front of his
home just last week for his mother, who lived with him and had been
hospitalized after taking a fall, neighbors said.
Currier’s father, Joseph, who died
several years ago, was a deputy chief in the city fire department, authorities
said.
